Resources for KinderFirsters...

I have been keeping an eye out for technology resources for Kindergarteners and First Graders. We have a terrific teacher in one of our courses who teachers Kindergarteners and is willing to explore the world of technology with them!

This was tweeted today by Angela Maiers (who, if you Twitter, is a must to follow):

Top Educational Websites For Children That Are Fun

I also found this:
Educational Freeware

Tux Paint came to mind, as my daughter was (and is, although she might not admit it at 13) a huge fan:

Tux Paint

I will keep looking, and in the meantime if you know of any thing that appeals to younger technology users, please share it here.

Museums on the internet...

Julie and I are in the throws of teaching a class on "Guided Inquiry: Learning in the 21st Century."
A portion of the chapter we are talking about tonight has to deal with Museums on the Internet.

As part of our discussion, I am placing links to some resources I want to share with the class here. In addition, I would welcome any comments as to how you feel these resources fit into research by students? Are they a reasonable substitute for actually visiting the museum physically? How important are primary sources to your students when researching topics?

An example of a Digital Story created following the visit of a museum:

Twitter

Twittering in education is starting to become a theme in my listservs, tweets and conversations.
In an effort to organize and digest the extensive resources coming my way, I decided to start this article.....
Some of the things I have bookmarked on my delicious (mengel38) include:

Teaching the iGeneration: 5 reasons Teachers and Students Should Twitter:
http://teachigen.blogspot.com/2009/04/5-reasons-teachers-and-students-should.html

10 Things Teachers Should Know to Get Started with Twitter:

http://www.thejournal.com/articles/24151

50 Ideas on Using Twitter for Education:
http://cooper-taylor.com/blog/2008/08/50-ideas-on-using-twitter-for-education/

The lightbulb moment occurred for me when I was working on a class for 21st Century Skills and Will Richardson tweeted an article just released at The Learning Technologies Centre on "New Learners? New Educators?"
http://ltc.umanitoba.ca/wikis/etl/index.php/New_Learners%3F_New_Educators%3F_New_Skills%3F
I went to the bit.ly link and found, not only a plethora of information I could use for my class, but the diiggoed comments of Will Richardson! Wow!

Since that time I have been an avid twitterer. I have found lots of resources, answers to questions, and just plain interesting stuff. I don't twitter 24-7 (no Blackberry), but I do have it on when I am checking email, doing paperwork, or trying to update this blog!

Njoy!

Top Delicious bookmark today....

I had to reinstall my Delicious Firefox add-ons today.
If you don't use Delicious, it is still one of my favorite bookmarking tools.
Delicious: http://del.icio.us
I have been trying to make myself Diigo, but somehow the quick and almost instantaneous social bookmarking in Delicious is my first reaction. Maybe it is the "can't teach an old dog...." axiom, but nevertheless....

Today on the Delicious homepage one of the top bookmarks caught my eye.
window.google_render_ad();
145 new quick cheat sheets for some of the most widely used tools on the web

Some great stuff to explore.
Someday, for just in time learning I'm sure.

One of the other top bookmarks is:
The Infinite Photograph
http://www.thegreenguide.com/infinite-photograph
Awesome!

This was tweeted to me today from techlearning:
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20227046.600-online-gaming-the-victorian-way.html
I thought of our Gaming in Education program for sysops!
So much information, so little time! (It's the day for adages!)

Yes, I know, I am as guilty as the next person of bird-walking while on the internet.

But it never ceases to amaze me all that is out there!
